See what she had to say about her alma mater: VT: Describe the campus setting and transportation options.How urban or safe is the campus?Are there buses or do you need a car/bike? Megan: The campus is found in the middle of Columbia, which is a very nicely developing college town. The transportation options are plentiful; there are shuttles and buses to many locations all over town. Living on campus is an option, and there are shuttles that transport many students to off-campus housing as well. Columbia also has wonderful hiking, running, and bike trails that connect in a system all over town, eliminating the need for a car or bus. The campus is very safe. There are blue lights, the emergency call system, located everywhere. VT: How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Megan: As for availability, it depends on the class and the teacher. However, every professor and T.A. that I encountered at Mizzou strove to help students learn in any way possible. My advisors were and are some of the most important people in my life. I worked in a science laboratory as an undergraduate, and the connections I made to my professors and advisors through that lab experience are still strong. As a graduate student at Mizzou, my advisors were amazingly helpful and provided guidance for me that I could not have gotten elsewhere. VT: How would you describe the dorm life rooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Megan: The dorms were wonderful. Mizzou has been working on renovating most of its on-campus housing to be suite style. I lived in dorms for two years as an undergraduate, all in suite-style housing. The rooms were very spacious and nice, with 4 people sharing 2 bedrooms, 2 baths, and a common living room. When I was a freshman, I was in a program meant to help ease the transition from high school to college, socially and academically. I was placed in a dorm with other students who had declared the same interests, so socialization opportunities were always present. We of course also ate on campus when I lived in the dorms. The food was wonderful, at Mizzou they are known for the Mizzou 22, not the freshman 15. That supposed weight gain, however, does not happen if you walk all over campus to class and stay active. The campus itself is about 15-20 minutes across walking, so there is plenty of opportunity for exercise. VT: Which majors/programs are best represented and supported?What did you study and why? Did the university do a good job supporting your particular area of study? Megan: Honestly, I cant say which majors/programs are best represented at Mizzou. There are a ton of majors, with several different colleges, just in the Columbia university system. I myself studied Secondary Science Education. This meant that my time was mainly split between Science and Education classes. I was supported very well in my area of study. As you know, Education students are placed in student teaching positions, and I received a ton of support as I went through that process. I also was a part of the Fellows Masters program. It is an intensive year-long program during which you receive your Masters in exchange for working full-time as a teacher in a partnering school, while going to graduate classes all at the same time. During this very stressful time, I received an amazing amount of help from the university. VT: How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Megan: It was very easy for me to make friends as a freshman due to the FIG, or Freshman Interest Group, that I was a part of. When it comes to Greek life, one can be as involved or not involved as one desires. Mizzou has a Greek town on the west side of the campus, and many guys and girls are involved in rush, homecoming, service projects, and other activities. If you are not Greek, you can still participate in all activities. I would say that the Greek community is as significant or insignificant as necessary. It is a huge campus and there are many things going on, both Greek and non. VT: How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services?Do many reputable companies recruit on campus? Megan: Honestly, I never used any of the Career Center resources. Students support services are around when needed, and they will always answer any questions. I was part of an Education major, so I did not pay attention to any companies recruiting on campus. VT: How are the various study areas such aslibraries, student union, and dorm lounges? Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? Megan: I loved Mizzou for its study areas. The libraries and other public work areas were always open late. The student union recently got remodeled and is amazing inside. It is a great place to eat and hang out during the day. There are many places on campus to hide away and study or work if you need a quiet area. I never found any of the student areas over-crowded. VT: Describe the surrounding town. What kinds of outside establishments / things to do are there that make it fun, boring, or somewhere in between?To what extent do students go to the downtown area of the city versus staying near campus? Megan: Columbia is an amazing college town. There is a wonderful downtown area located just to the north of campus. There are many restaurants, bars and shops located there. Students head downtown often, catching lunch between classes and hanging out downtown on weekends. Columbia also has a mall right off the highway. There are several brewpubs and original/one-of-a-kind restaurants scattered throughout town. There is so much more that Columbia has to offer, however. In town, there are many parks and bike trails. Those lead to out of town, where there is plenty of outdoor recreation, hiking, and camping. I loved living in the town of Columbia after I moved off campus, because it has so much to offer that has nothing to do with the university. The schools and hospitals are also some of the best around. VT: How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Megan: Class size has never really affected my performance, so I was never upset about that. I liked large classes because my professor didnt know my name, and I liked small classes because the professor did know my name. The student body at Mizzou is huge; it is a state school, after all. VT: Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Megan: I had a professor who was running to class because he was always a little bit behind, even though he delivered content in a most excellent manner. He was running down the stairs of the classroom, and tripped and fell. The result of the spill was a broken arm. In the following lectures, he would get so excited talking and gesturing that his sling would slide off! This man was dedicated to transferring his knowledge to us, that is for sure. Introvert Whisperer / Is it really a Hostile Work Environment 5 Steps for Dealing with Difficult People - Introvert Whisperer Is it really a Hostile Work Environment? 5 Steps for Dealing with Difficult People Sometimes terminology is used in our culture that gets adopted and used, but it isn’t being used correctly. “Hostile Work Environment” is one of those terms that you hear, but may or may not be true to the legal definition of it. That’s right  when it comes to this term; we have laws about hostile work environments and with the law comes a legal definition. It’s good to know the difference, because depending on what you are really talking about, your potential actions could be very different. To quote About.com: “A hostile work environment is created by a boss or coworker whose actions, communication or behavior makes doing your job impossible. This means that the behavior altered the terms, conditions, and/or reasonable expectations of a comfortable work environment…and must be discriminatory in nature. (Discriminatory would be about age, religion, gender, or race). The behavior must last over time and must be severe.”  As you can see this is a very specific set of behaviors that protect our right to work. There can be legal ramifications because someone has made working and prospering at work impossible, if this issue is not handled properly by the employer. Since we are clear about the true, legal term “Hostile Work Environment”, let’s look at what is taking place when your work situation may or may not be aligned to this technical term, but it’s bad nonetheless. What can you do in either situation? Know the proper way to escalate an issue. You don’t want to go from your office to the local Bureau of Labor and Industry to talk to a lawyer. No matter which situation you are in, you are expected to work from the bottom up. Your steps should be: 1. Address the issue directly with the offender. Difficult for many people, but necessary, is to adequately communicate what the issue is and to give a very specific example. You don’t want to use absolutes like “you always talk vulgar to me” when that isn’t actually true, because that person may be vulgar frequently, but not ‘always’. Consider: “When you spoke to me just now, that was vulgar and inappropriate. You do not have my permission to continue. 2. If the issue continues.  Again, difficult for some people, but you need to repeat your previous message and then let them know you will be escalating it to both management and HR. By this point, you should be documenting both your conversations and comments made to you by the offender. You may need this type of detailed information when you take the issue up the food chain. 3. Take it to management and Human Resources (HR).  Not all companies have an HR, but if they do, you need to cover your bases and ensure they are in the loop. When you take your issue to your manager, you will be much more effective if you can keep calm and professional. An emotional scene won’t help make your case despite how you might feel about it. You need to be prepared to give specific examples. You also need to be prepared for management to speak to the offender, making the previous step important. You must hold your management accountable for correcting the situation. This doesn’t mean you insisting on this person being fired, but it is reasonable to expect that they will take whatever action they think will curb the inappropriate behavior. You should expect, and ask for a follow up, to minimally hear back that they did take action. You don’t need a full account of what was said and done, as that is confidential. 4. If it continues.  Again, you need to follow the previous steps and waste no time informing your management and HR. You are still looking for these people to take action. 5. And if it still continues.  At this point, you may be out of options. If the issue does follow the definition of a hostile work environment, you may have grounds for a legal action. If it is simply someone who does annoying things, badgers your work or makes rude remarks, your only two options are: -Take the issue to a higher management level. -Leave. While it might seem unfair that you would have to be the one to leave, all too many people tend to be weenies   when  dealing with difficult personnel issues. You can either find a way to tolerate it, be miserable or leave. Hopefully, you will never have to face this type of situation but if you do, learn the right way, the professional way of addressing this kind of issue. It will be more effective in the long run for everyone involved. This is a type of drawing that we predominantly fin d in geometry to represent a cube, for example.Linear perspective is often used in drawing. In order to create a good linear perspective, we generally concentrate on these two elements:A horizon lineOne or more vanishing points.From these elements, by drawing lines we can create a grid that will work as visual guides for drawing the various parts of our scene.There are many different types of linear perspectives, which helps the drawer create depth and volume in their work:Frontal perspective: the eye is facing the scene front-on. The drawing is based on the horizon line at eye level, and all the lines meet at one sole vanishing point.Oblique perspective: we see this in two directions. The composition has two vanishing points. This type of perspective uses two vanishing points, allowing you to draw cubes and other geometric shapes by taking into account their real shape and depth.Aerial perspective: here we take into account all the dimensions of the object by working on its represe ntation with three vanishing points. This is the most realistic perspective, predominantly used in architecture to represent furniture, for example.Mastering drawing in perspective is necessary to create a realistic drawing and give it volume, such as drawing a hand for example. Drawing in 3D is not about improvisation. You need to really use your eyes and take in the proportions of your object as faithfully as possible. Representing characters or objects by properly observing the effects of depth is crucial for great 3D drawing.Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa is an example of the atmospheric perspective technique. This means that whatever is in the foreground is drawn in a clear and precise way, but the more you look in depth, the more the details are unclear. Some artists also play on colours an d gradients as well to create this effect of depth: the cooler the colours, the less precise the details of the scene.This is a technique developed and used by Flemish painters of the 15th century, but it is also seen in the work of Leonardo da Vinci, notably in the Mona Lisa.How Do I Create an Optical Illusion Effect in a Drawing?Those who master the art of drawing in perspective achieve an even more impressive result in their work. The objects seem to literally jump of the page and come to life.When a drawing is successful it gives the impression of coming to life and really takes on three dimensions. It’s a great start for designing an eye-catching company logo too!This impression is an optical illusion, which is only noticeable from one specific angle. When you look at an anamorphic drawing you have to look at it a certain way in order to see the result in 3D. It’s not only necessary to know how to distort an image correctly, but for the result to be really realistic, you also need to master basic drawing techniques. There are quite a few steps to get from the first sketch to the finished piece. You will to know how to draw each detail of your subject, and also how to paint or colour your drawing for effect.To create an anamorphic drawing, you’ll need to distort the image that you wish to represent on paper. The main techniques that will help you draw an anamorphic image are:Use a camera to capture your object in a photo, which you can print or display to help you sketch it accuratelyUse computer software to distort the object that you wish to represent so that you can draw it easilyUse a grid system to draw the object in its correct proportionsCut out part of the outline of the drawing to reinforce the 3D impressionUse multiple sheets or fold a sheet to achieve the desired volume effectMany artists have been able to master the art of anamorphic drawing, such as Leon Keer and Kurt Wenner. You can sometimes even come across 3D art on the ground or on walls in public spaces. Many street artists produce striking realist pieces.Between gaping holes in the middle of the pavement and sharks protruding from the road, there are many performances from artists such as Edgar Mueller and Julian Beever, for example, that are really impressive.You could even use this technique to design your own tattoo! How to prepare for the 11 Plus interview If your child has reached the interview stage of the 11 Plus exam at an independent school, congratulations! They are one step closer to that offer, and they’ve already done extremely well. The interview process is difficult to prepare for: schools will be looking for confident and articulate students. We asked one of our top tutors and 11 Plus experts, James M, to share some of the most common 11 Plus interview questions… Introductory and warm-up questions Tell me about yourself! How would your friends describe you? Describe yourself using 3 adjectives Tell me about your hobbies and interests. What is your favourite subject? What book are you reading at the moment? Tell me about it and describe it using adjectives. General questions Why do you want to come to our school? What’s the difference between our school and the school you are coming from? Tell me about a lesson that you really enjoyed. What made it so enjoyable? If you were head of our school, what changes would you make? What makes a good teacher? What do you find hard at school,   and what do you do when you find something hard? Why are you suited for our school? Have you visited our school before? What did you think? If I take the engine out of a car, is it still a car? Answering the questions James has also put together some of his top tips for students who have an 11+ interview coming up. Before the interview, students should: Look at the school website and write down three interesting things that you like Try and visit the school and talk to pupils/teachers. Remember who you spoke to and what you liked about the experience Practise with a parent / teacher / friend! During the interview: When first meeting teachers always smile, shake hands and make eye contact Make sure you answer the question! Talk for about 5-10 seconds for each answer, because any more than that is too long, and any less may make you seem shy Think of examples for your all answers by incorporating your hobbies and interests. You might like playing a musical instrument but give more detail: “I play piano grade 4 and play in the school band”. This is much better than just saying “I play piano”. For the brainteasers, think about the wording of the question. For example, “What is bravery?” To answer this, think of things that are brave and things that are not brave. What do all the things that are brave have in common? Similarly, with “How many bricks make a wall?” you could think about what a wall is. A wall can just be a barrier between two things, so a single brick could be a wall (especially to a small insect). For a human though a barrier would have to be bigger! Some teens take it all in stride while others struggle with the impending life decisions and the overall stress of school. One of the best things you as a parent can do to help your teen is build his or her confidence. Confident teens have a good attitude about school, are persistent and tend to weather the ups and downs effectively. What can you do to bolster your teens confidence? Here are six tips: Let your teen struggle. Often, learning occurs when teens have to muddle through things and figure them out for themselves. Resist the urge to step in and fix problems for your teen. Over-helping with homework and problem solving does your teen no favors in the long run. Encourage goal setting. Goal setting is a valuable process for many reasons. It gets your teen thinking about the future, keeps him or her focused on how to achieve important endeavors, and guides your teen toward personal growth. That said, it is important that you let your teen own this process. Its fine to get your teens wheels turning and offer ideas and support, but the goals themselves should be your teensnot your goals for your teen. Teach your teen to care about what he or she can control. Everyone tries and fails sometimes. Remind your teen to take pride in his or her efforts and diligence rather than focus solely on desired outcomes. Acknowledge the development that occurs when your teen puts in the work. Nudge your teen toward taking risks. Playing it safe all the time limits growth. Your teen might one day go on to start a business or have a job that requires frequent decision making based on different pros/cons and risk factors. Taking calculated risks and pushing oneself to try new things have advantagesand your teen will learn from any missteps. Put your teen in charge. Hopefully you have given your teen the opportunity to make decisions often throughout his or her life, but this is especially important in high school. Your teen needs to learn how to weigh options and be decisiveand also how to pivot to try new approaches after making poor decisions. Be a good role model. Mom and Dad, dont underestimate the influence you can have on your teen every single day. Take pride in your accomplishments. Try something new and give it your best. Learn from your mistakes and share with your teen how you do soand how you grow from the experience. Confidence isnt something that you can simply give to your teen, but you are in a great position to help him or her nurture and develop it. However, this is totally untrue. Companies dont hire college students to do mundane tasks that no one else wants. Sure, you may have to make a few copies throughout the semester, but the majority of your job should be doing something worthwhile. Unless, of course, you accepted an internship for copy-making. 2. All internships are unpaid. A common rumor about college internships is that theyre all unpaid. However, there are a fair number of internships that  are  paid. The pay might not be as high as you were expecting mostly because you dont have a degree yet and youre an  intern,  but having an internship and gaining the experience of being an intern can easily outweigh what might seem like less-than-perfect pay. 3. All internships will result in a job offer. Most of the time, this could probably be assumed. However, theres always a chance that your internship wont turn into a job. However, you shouldnt accept an internship hoping that it leads to a job. You should accept an internship because it will give you the experience you need to be better at your job in the future. If youre a really great intern and your internship turns into a job wonderful! But the expectation shouldnt be that an offer will be waiting for you on your last day. Dont be discouraged by this misconception! Just because your internship may not result in a job offer at the end of the semester, theres a lot more that could result! If you walk into your internship every day ready to work and get the job done, more than likely youve acquired more than one strong recommendation from your internship supervisor. This can come in handy when you are applying for jobs following graduation. Having someone to vouch for your work ethic and productivity in the workplace will go a long way when it comes to securing a job. Employers have overwhelmingly stated that an internship is one of the most important factors to consider when they look at hiring recent college graduates. Additionally, completing an internship can result in: increased confidence: youll feel more confident in your workplace abilities if youve had experience in the field critical contacts in the field: maybe your relationships with these people arent strong enough to serve as references, but they may be able to steer you in the right direction when it comes to finding a job after graduation an education you cant learn from the classroom: there are certain things textbooks and professors cannot prepare you for. College internships are worthy, whether or not theyre with a company thats nationally recognized. The experience you can gain from  any  company, regardless of their national ranking, will be worthy in the future. Applying for jobs after youve had an internship automatically gives you a leg-up on all the applicants who  havent  had an internship. It doesnt matter if you worked for BuzzFeed or not, at least you went through the process of applying and accepted a position as an intern in the first place! After all, a large portion of your education can come from the experience of  doing it.  What youre studying in school doesnt have to limit you to what youre capable of doing on a day-to-day basis. Internships with non-profit organizations are some of the most flexible. If youre willing to help people and work with the community on a daily basis, youre more than qualified to be an intern at a non-profit. When youre thinking about applying for an internship, or youre looking for an internship you think you would enjoy, dont limit yourself to what youve studied thus far. Internships are open to all kinds of students and majors. Youll never know if you dont try, right? 6. Internships are only for the latter half of college. Internships come in many shapes and sizes. You arent forced to wait until youre a junior or a senior to get an internship. The earlier you can snag one, the better off your resume is going to look. Internships are offered during each semester and the summer. Students tend to think internships are for the latter half of college because this is when students tend to have time to use a semester interning. Its unlikely that in the spring semester of your freshman year youll get an internship, just because you havent taken too many classes yet, but by the time youre a sophomore, youre a strong candidate for an internship. If you dont want to use a semester working an internship, theres always the option of taking a summer internship. Additionally, you can often gain college credit for an internship if you set it up with your department. Engineering, business, and architecture often set up flexibility in their programs of study for an optional internship. This is probably because students in these majors are the most likely to apply for and get an internship. The experience and education youll gain from being an intern, even for just the summer term, is more valuable than pushing your graduation another semester. If you have the opportunity to work an internship, but youre worried its going to take you longer to graduate, think about how much more attractive your resume will be when you enter the job market if youve already had some experience. Its definitely worth it, and I think any advisor you talk to will tell you to absolutely snatch that opportunity! 7. A high GPA will get you an internship. A high GPA will certainly help your application throughout the process, but this isnt the only thing youll need to get an internship. The process is much more complicated. If you want to secure an internship, one of the key parts of the process is an interview. If you get invited to an interview, you should be prepared in the following ways: research the employer beforehand have a list of questions that are important for you to have answered dress professionally; you wont be taken seriously if you show up in a T-shirt arrive on time be positive be energetic thank the interviewers; showing gratitude will make you stand out 8. Interns are free labor. Oftentimes, companies are excited to welcome interns to their team! New, fresh ideas, upbeat personalities, and young, excited individuals can add a whole new perspective to the teams goals. Sometimes, unpaid internships get a bad name because it seems like interns are being taken advantage of. But this is likely  not  the case. Companies seek out interns for a specific purpose whether that be training (hopefully) future employees, gaining new perspectives, or giving back to the colleges and communities who support them, an internship (even if its unpaid) is beneficial for both parties. If you find yourself making copies and coffee runs in your first few days at the office, dont be disgruntled. Part of working an internship is for the company to see what youre interested in and what youre willing to work on while youre there. Dont be afraid to voice your ambitions to your supervisor. Showing youre interested and motivated will really impress your coworkers! 9. The application process is long and enduring. Knowing when to apply for an internship can be tricky. The rule of thumb is that its never too early to start researching and applying for an internship. Youll have to get all the materials together that are necessary to complete an application. Sometimes youll need recommendation letters, transcripts, and, of course, youll need to interview. However, needs of an organization can change on a dime, so if youre looking for a summer internship and its late spring, keep trying do not give up! Companies will oftentimes reach out for an intern at the last minute simply because their needs have changed. If youre looking for a summer internship (which I would say is most popular), you should start researching and applying  before  winter break. Theres a lot that goes into accepting an intern to a company, so the earlier you start the process, the more likely it is that youll have everything together and be fully prepared to be considered for an internship. However, it is more than possible to make an internship count for college credit as well. Typically, there is some way to accrue credit for an internship. Whether it be through the department youre in, or elective credit, sometimes referred to as field study, receiving credit for the work youre putting in at an internship is more than possible while youre in college. Its important to start looking into the possibility of an internship early on for two reasons: planning your academic timeline and meeting all the necessary requirements to graduate. If you want your internship to count for college credit (which you more than likely do!) get started early to ensure everything is in place. Whats in it for the employer Sometimes college students assume that an employer is just looking for free labor, but this is likely not the case. Employers use internships for a few different reasons. The underlying reason for hiring an intern is for the company to get a return on their investment whether its in the present or the future. Sometimes hiring an intern is a solution for the company being unable to find a full-time employee to take a position. Another reason an employer might be looking for an intern is because they want a new perspective on a project theyre currently involved with. Sometimes interns are the best way to get a refreshing take on something that the companys been working on for a while. If an employer is looking to improve the overall public view of the company, hiring interns that have positive experiences may boost community reputation. When interns have a good experience with a company, theyre more likely to talk about their experience with their peers, friends, and family members. Employers should approach your internship with a list of accomplishments you both want to achieve. You should feel obvious transparency between you and your supervisors. You should feel like part of a team. If you dont, you should think about whether or not you want that internship. That being said, an internship during college can be a fantastic experience for todays student. Theres so much to be learned from working with people in the field, understanding how a company operates, and gaining the knowledge and experience that comes from an internship. If youre planning to apply for a college internship, know that the application process is half the battle.
